7-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking (Machame Route)

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Pre-climb briefing by your guide to prepare you for the adventure ahead. Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi.

Day 2: Moshi – Machame Gate to Machame Camp

levation: 1,640m (5,380ft) to 2,850m (9,350ft) After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate and complete registration. Start trekking through the lush rainforests of Kilimanjaro. Expect to see giant ferns, mosses, and unique flora. Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight. Hiking Time: 5-7 hours. Accommodation: Machame Camp (tents).

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 2,850m (9,350ft) to 3,850m (12,600ft) Trek through moorland and heather, with views of Kilimanjaro's peaks. This section offers stunning landscapes. Arrive at Shira Camp located on the Shira Plateau. Hiking Time: 4-6 hours. Accommodation: Shira Camp (tents).

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Elevation: 3,850m (12,600ft) to 3,900m (12,800ft) via Lava Tower (4,600m / 15,190ft) Start by climbing towards Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point. After lunch near Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, passing through the beautiful Barranco Valley. Hiking Time: 6-8 hours. Accommodation: Barranco Camp (tents).

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,900m (12,800ft) to 4,035m (13,240ft) Climb the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding section, followed by a trek across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. Shorter day, allowing for acclimatization. Hiking Time: 4-5 hours. Accommodation: Karanga Camp (tents).

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m (13,240ft) to 4,640m (15,220ft) Trek through an alpine desert landscape on the way to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Rest in the afternoon and prepare for the midnight summit push. Hiking Time: 4-5 hours. Accommodation: Barafu Camp (tents).

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m (15,220ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft), then descend to 3,100m (10,170ft) Wake up around midnight and start the summit ascent via Stella Point (5,756m/18,885ft). Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, and celebrate your achievement with breathtaking sunrise views. Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night. Summit Time: 7-8 hours. Descent Time: 6-7 hours. Accommodation: Mweka Camp (tents).

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, then to Moshi

Elevation: 3,100m (10,170ft) to 1,640m (5,380ft) A final trek through the rainforest to Mweka Gate where you’ll receive your certificate. Drive back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration dinner. Hiking Time: 3-4 hours. Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi.

Day 9: Departure

Depending on your flight schedule, relax or explore Moshi before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.
